Dear College Community

Welcome to the final Marist Star for Term 3. How quickly this term has gone by with so many exciting activities happening.

It has been an excellent term and students and staff have all worked very hard to achieve their goals. Seniors in particular are quickly coming to the end of their 13 years of schooling. The upcoming holidays will be a timely rest for them but also an opportunity to realign themselves and get organised for the final sprint home.

Seniors only have one and half weeks of classes upon their return to Term 4; thus, I imagine some study will be in order over the break as well.

Recently, Mr John Hamilton and I interviewed many of our Year 11 students who indicated a desire to become Year 12 leaders for 2023. The students self-nominated, and the Year 11 and 12 cohort and staff voted, with twelve students being elected to the Student Representative Council (SRC), and a further eight elected as House Captains.

In all, twenty seniors will be student representatives and will run many wonderful activities throughout 2023. From the 12 SRC members, School Captains and Vice Captains have been elected. Students prepared and delivered speeches to their peers and staff earlier in the week, and a second round of voting took place for these leadership positions.

It was an absolute delight to be involved in the interview process. The Year 11’s were extremely impressive and it has been a difficult task in selecting the final group. In addition, those students who nominated for House Captains spoke and sold themselves well at interview. The future of the College is in very good hands.

It is my privilege to congratulate the following students as the new 2023 SRC, House Captains, School Captains and Vice Captains.

State Winner

A huge congratulations to Year 10 student, Elliott Angilley who was the Tasmanian State Winner of the Year 10 Category of the Australian History Competition with 96% correct. Elliott was awarded the State 1st prize medal for his outstanding achievement.

As you may know, Mr Gregg Sharman returns from 12 months’ leave for the beginning of the 2023 academic year.

To assist him as members of the Leadership Team, I’m delighted to announce Mrs Emily Sass and Mr Sam Johnstone have been appointed as Deputy Principals of the College for a 5-year term. Mrs Emily Sass, as Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching, and Mr Sam Johnstone, as Deputy Principal Pastoral Wellbeing.

Both have been in acting positions on the Leadership Team this year, but these adjustments now allow for greater certainty and stability within the College. Both Emily and Sam will be a great asset to the College.

I wish you all a very safe and relaxing October break and we look forward to a busy and successful Term 4.

Kindest regards

Mr Noel Nethery
