Dear Marist Regional College Families,

As we navigate through the challenges of the academic year, I am continually amazed by the courage and strength of our students, staff, and families. The past year has been particularly difficult for many, as we have faced loss and uncertainty together. In times like these, the importance of ongoing pastoral care cannot be overstated.

At Marist Regional College, we understand the significant role we play in supporting our community, especially during times of grief and transition. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the phenomenal and empathetic work of our staff in providing unwavering support to our students and families across the coast. Their dedication and compassion do not go unnoticed.

As we move forward, particularly for families with students in the senior years, I urge you to keep a close eye on your children. We are approaching the halfway point of the academic year, a time when students may face increased pressure and stress. It is essential that we remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring the well-being of our young people.

Additionally, I encourage (or even implore) you to reach out to our key staff for assistance when needed. We are here to support you, as our partnership and your communication with us is invaluable. Whether it is academic concerns, personal struggles, or anything in between, we are prepared to go beyond to provide the necessary support. Please take the opportunities presented.

Our College Psychologist, April Saltmarsh, will be communicating with families in Years Ten to Twelve about some excellent opportunities available to families soon. What is being provided is both extremely generous, but necessary for our people. Please stay tuned for more information from April.

We must also recognise the outstanding work of Sam Johnstone, our Deputy Principal for Pastoral Care and Well-Being, along with his team of Year Level Coordinators and Well-Being Staff. Their constant communication with families and their dedication to building strong relationships have been instrumental in fostering a supportive environment where students feel comfortable reaching out for help and advocating for themselves and others.

Indeed, pastoral care extends far beyond our Well-Being Team. I see empathy from staff in their support of our students and one another; a spirit of “family”– an aspiration for every Marist community.

On Wednesday, I walked the College campus with legendary Marist, and now retired, teacher, Mr Tim Horniblow. Tim was amazed by the College climate and atmosphere in our classrooms. Despite what we might see on the periphery, we may not always understand what is bubbling away under the surface, nor the heaviness of the baggage that people bring to school each day.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and trust in Marist Regional College. We urge you to lean on the College as I see it as a pillar of strength for our families and our north-west region.

Yours in family, faith, love and solidarity,

Gregg Sharman
