Recently, Logan Jack Barry (Student) met with Mayor Teeny Brunby, Jarrod Denny and Simon Hughes (Engineering) and Chris Coad (Project Management) from Burnie City Council. Also in attendance were 2 Environmental Field Officers.

The object of the meeting was to bring council up to date with the subject matter of Logan Jack’s research which won the Mayor’s Prize for Sustainability at the BIG Science Fair. The project explored the negative impacts of adding grass cuttings to water in terms of dissolved oxygen, with subsequent negative effects on animal life in creeks. It was positively received and changed practices have already been adopted toward improving the waterway quality.

We have been invited to explore their wetland development at the old tip site as a fine example of rehabilitation in our surroundings (a STEM project for 2025 could eventuate, in the hands of interested students).
