SATIS Hockey State Final
The Boys Hockey team travelled on an overnight trip to Hobart to take on the SSATIS winning team, The Hutchins School.
It was a challenging first half, with the MRC team on the back foot defensively. Despite being on the back-foot, some dour defending against multiple penalty corners kept our boys in it, going into the half time break deadlocked at 0-0.
It took until late in the 3rd quarter for Hutchins to break the deadlock, scoring two quick goals. This kicked the MRC team into action with Tyson J hitting the back of the net with a reverse stick effort on a penalty corner, and then following it up a few minutes later scoring a field goal after a fantastic solo effort to tie the game up at 2-2. Hutchins scored from another penalty corner with 5 minutes left. MRC were unable to take their penalty corner chance with 1 minute remaining, resulting in the final score 3-2 in favour of Hutchins.
It was a quality display of Hockey from all players, and the MRC team can hold their heads high after a spirited effort. Best players for MRC were Tyson J, Sam T and Rohan B. A big thank you to Ms Helen Byrne for coaching and supporting the team throughout the season.
NSATIS Sport – Netball and Soccer
Netball started with a road-trip to Launceston Grammar in Week 1. The 1sts team got off to a strong start, in the match, narrowly behind by 2 goals at half-time. However, Grammar scored strongly in the third to run out eventual winners 35-21. The 2nds team put in an excellent defensive and shooting display and gave a consistent 4-quarter effort, with Mia J shooting extremely well, as the team led from the start and ran out 32-23 victors.
In round 2, the teams travelled to Scotch Oakburn College. With a number of players unavailable due to state commitments, the MRC teams put up some fight. The 1sts again put in a gritty performance – well in the match and just 2 goals down at 3-quarter time. Unfortunately, our girls were unable to come away with the win, with the score finishing 25 – 36. It was a strong second and third quarter shooting performance by the 2nds team, where they scored 17-7 over their opponents. This saw MRC come out on top 28-19 and remain unbeaten through two matches.
Coach Rebecca C is buoyed by the performance of the teams for the rest of the season, given there are a number of players to return.
Soccer was due to start week 1, but too much rain flooded the Launceston Grammar grounds, with the round 1 match being postponed until Monday 19 August. Round 2 saw the teams travel to Scotch Oakburn College.
The Boys team fought out a tough 2-2 draw, with goals being scored by Tom P and Harrison J. There was a late opportunity to pinch the win but unfortunately, the ball didn’t find the back of the net. Harry D in goals was excellent for the team. They will host Leighland Christian School next week.
The Girls team had a resounding win 12-1, with Grace S the pick of the team, scoring an astonishing 9 goals! Breanna D (on NSATIS debut) scored 2 goals and a further brace to Ineka B rounded out the goal scorers. They will next play St Brendan Shaw at home.
Thurgood Cup
The annual Thurgood Cup Soccer competition was launched with a SRC vs Staff match in front of a packed Harcombe Centre on Friday. Celebrating ‘Green and Gold Day’, the Olympic Spirit was on full display from both teams. Staff were crowned the champions winning 4 -1.
The Thurgood Cup tournament will start in earnest in Term 3; parents/guardians should keep an eye out for Consent2Go if their child has chosen to participate.
