NSATIS Volleyball
The Boys started up their season with a road-trip to Scotch Oakburn in Week 3. After going down in a tight first-set, they weren’t able take a set. The second match was postponed to the following week.
In what is only a 4-team competition, Week 4 saw teams visit the Harcombe Centre to play, and whilst there was improvement in the number points won by the team, they again weren’t able to overcome Scotch Oakburn, again going down 2-0. Matches against the two St Patrick’s College teams saw the boys come away with a 1-win (over St Pats Green) and 2-loss (to St Pats Gold) record from the evening, leaving them sitting in third on the ladder. Coach, Mr Gale has been buoyed by the team improving each match, but with just two left to play in the short season, the team faces an uphill battle to make the final.
The Girls team also had their first matches of the season at home in Week 4, with a number of returning players, as well as new additions taking to the court. A narrow loss to last year’s NSATIS winners in Scotch Oakburn Gold, was not without chances, despite going down 0 – 2. The team bounced back to get a win over Scotch Oakburn Navy 2-0.
NSATIS Soccer
The Girls team played local rival St Brendan Shaw, and in a slog-fest, both teams traded opportunities in front of goal. It was 0-0 heading into the break, and unfortunately, it was St Brendan’s who went ahead in the second half, where they were able to hold out repeat chances from Marist, with St Brendan’s winning with a final score of 2-1. The girls had a bye in Week 4.
NSATIS Netball
Prior to the bye in Week 4, our Netball teams had strong wins against visiting teams. The 1sts had a full team to select from, going on to defeat Leighland Christain School in a strong and polished display, 57 – 17. Whilst the 2nds team, also with a full contingent of players, defeated St Brendan Shaw 32 – 24.
The 1sts team currently sit in 4th place, and are in a fight to make finals, with the 2nds team still undefeated with games against the traditionally strong St Patrick’s teams to come.
NWJFU Girls Football
The Western competition kicked off last week with 6 teams from across the North and West Coast in the conference. The first game saw MRC hosting Burnie High. It was a strong win from Marist as they kicked 7 goals to none in the first half, before running out eventual 10.12.72 to 0.3.3 winners. Eliza D, Piper S and Ella M were among the best players for the home team.
West Coast visited Marist to play in round 2, and again, it was a strong performance by the girls, as accurate kicking saw them run out 14.6.90 to 3.3.21 winners.
Eliza D was again in the best, kicking a number of goals, along with strong performances from Maryella M and Ebony F. The team travels to Smithton next week to play away.
West Coast also brought a 9/10 Boys Basketball team for a sports-exchange. In what was labelled a ‘fast and flowing’ game, MRC were at one stage up by 24 points, before an 18-0 run put West Coast back in the game. At the final buzzer, MRC were able to hang on for an 8-point win with Will P and Noah M among the strong contributors for the home team.
