SATIS Swimming
The overnight trip was a success for the 27 students that represented MRC at the SATIS Swimming Carnival at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre. With 14 SATIS schools represented, there was some high-quality swimming on display.
Exceptional results were achieved by Mackenzie T (2nd Open 50m Freestyle, 2nd Open 100m Freestyle), and Campbell J (3rd U15 50m Breaststroke), with the Boys U15 team finishing 3rd overall in their year level, and the U16 Girls finishing 5th. MRC was ranked 6th in the overall Co-Ed Aggregate Shield, which is an excellent achievement by the entire team.
Hobart trips are always a significant undertaking, and I’d like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the students who travelled to represent the College, as well as the staff that supported them in Mr Josh Mackie, Mrs Rhiannon Bomford and Mrs Belinda Ryan.
Hawks Cup – Girls Football
The NWJFU Premiership team travelled to Launceston to play on York Park against Clarence High School (South) and Prospect High School (North) in the Hawks Cup, the best schoolgirls teams in the state.
An early start for the bus trip, first game of the day saw MRC play Prospect – it was a see-sawing game, with Marist behind on the scoreboard for most of the game, but making continual pushes, kicking critical goals to stay within touching distance. With the ball spending the bulk of the second half in the Marist forward line, a chance to Eliza D on the siren fell short, with Prospect taking a narrow win 6.4.40 – 5.2.32. It was an exceptional effort by the team who were unlucky not to pinch the win.
Goal kickers: Sabella H, Piper S, Breanna D, Bronte M, Eliza D.
After a break, where Prospect defeated Clarence by 4 points to earn a spot in the final, MRC took on Clarence in the final round robin match. Clarence kicked the first goal of the game, before MRC had the weight of possession in their forward line but couldn’t convert the goals early starting with 5 straight behinds. Piper S snagged a goal in the last minute of the first half, to give MRC a narrow lead. It was the continued pressure of MRC in the second half across the midfield that overran the back-to-back champions, as Marist overpowered Clarence to run away and win the game 5.12.42 – 1.3.9 and through to the final.
Goals: 3 Piper S, Stella A, Bronte M
Heavy rain fell as the final got underway. MRC got on the board early through Bronte M with a mark and goal at the top of the square before the teams traded end-to-end and physical encounters. A critical mark and goal from Charlotte B, who was crunched in the contest gave MRC a 2-goal lead, before Prospect scored a goal in the last minute of the half to draw within 6 points. Playing their fourth ‘half’ in a row in heavy conditions, the MRC girls gave it a willing crack throwing themselves at everything. There were fatigued bodies cramping up from both teams, but it was unfortunately Prospect that ran away with the match in the end over a gallant MRC, the final score 7.7.49 to 2.3.15.
Goals: Bronte M, Charlotte B
Best MRC players across the day: Sabella H, Ella M, Yumi A, Eliza D, Piper S, Layla M, Maryella M, and Bronte M.
In what was a very young team, with a high number of Year 8’s, the team should be unbelievably proud of their efforts across the day. A significant thanks to senior students Claudia D, Tayla H and Tully P for their time coaching the team throughout the season, as well as Mr Toby Skene, Mrs Renee French and Mr Brady Yates for supporting the team.
BNA Winter Netball
It has been a long season for the 8 MRC teams in the BNA Saturday competition, which finished up with Grand Finals over the last two weekends. With the season starting back in early May, MRC teams have battled local rivals every Saturday morning at the BNA courts, braving wet, wild, and cold weather.
In the junior divisions, MRC had teams qualify for all 3 Grand Finals. Congratulations to MRC Black who defeated rival BHS Yellow in the B1 Grand Final. MRC student Amy G was named Best in Final for her performance. In other finals, BHS Black defeated MRC Pink, with MRC student Jayda M being named best in final, whilst MRC Red went down to PHS Red.
In other divisions, MRC had teams qualify in two finals. In B2, MRC Blue were defeated by Penguin 7/8’s, whilst in the A1 division, a thrilling match saw MRC Purple narrowly lose to BHS Red. Well done to MRC student April T who was named Best in Final.
There are significant sacrifices made by students, families, and coaches to enable MRC teams to participate in this competition weekly. Well done to everyone who have been involved in either playing or supporting roles throughout the season.
The College would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the volunteerism of all our BNA coaches who are either parents or students for giving up their time, mentorship, and expertise to enable our teams to participate, as well as the BNA for providing the competition opportunity for our students.
High School Netball Championships
The North West division of the Netball Tasmania Championships took place in Week 9 in Ulverstone, with MRC sending Girls teams in the 7/8 and 9/10 divisions, and a 7/8 Boys team.
It was a fantastic effort by all of our teams, who showed the strength of Marist Netball with winning performances throughout the day. Well done to the 7/8 Boys (def Penguin 16-11) and 9/10 Girls (def Latrobe 17-9) who won their respective finals and were declared North-West Champions. The Grade 7/8 Girls also made the final, but went down fighting to rivals Burnie High 15-8.
All teams have qualified for the State Championships, to be held at the Silverdome in Launceston in Term 4. Thank you to Mr Dwayne Johnson, Ms Bec Cunningham, and Miss Zahli French for coaching the teams, as well as those staff and families that attended to support our student-teams.
Red Herring State Surfing Championships
Congratulations to students Oscar T and Liam T who represented MRC in the State Titles at Clifton Beach. Competing in Division A, the boys qualified second in their heat of the U19 MR Shield, to progress through to the final where they finished in 4th place. With 6-foot plus waves, it was difficult conditions for everyone, but the boys surfed strongly and represented the school with pride.
Rugby
Over the past 4 weeks, the U14 and U16 Rugby Teams have been playing in a Friday night competition in Devonport taking on students from schools in Devonport and Launceston. At times, it has been a physical and bruising encounter, but the boys have stood strong and represented the school with pride. A few times throughout the matches, the boys have generously played for the other team, resulting in some MRC-on-MRC physicality, but the attitude and approach from all students has been one of opportunity and enjoyment. The competition wrapped up this week.
A big thank you to Mrs Donna Scott, Mr Ed Jones and Mrs Belinda Ryan for supporting the team in training and the matches, as well as the Devonport Rugby Club for offering the competition opportunity.
Thurgood Cup
The Term 3 annual tournament wrapped up in front of a packed crowd in the Harcombe Centre with two undefeated teams, and those that topped both pools taking each other on in a much-anticipated final. It was a high-quality tournament across the board with many upsets. In the final, the 2023 Champions ‘The Accountants’ met ‘SBC Dragons’ in a titanic battle. With a controversial no-goal decision during the match, leaving the score tied at 1-1 at full time, the game was sent to penalties to decide the outcome. The SBC Dragons went on to win 3-1 in penalties and take the trophy and bragging rights over their peers.
