State High School Netball Championships

Three MRC teams qualified through the regional tournament held earlier in the year for the State Championships, held at the Launceston Silverdome against the best school teams from across the state.

The 9/10 Girls team had a fantastic tournament, defeating the highly fancied St Patrick’s College during the round matches, winning their way through to the final, where they finished runner up. The 7/8 Girls won through to the Semi-Finals, finishing in equal 3rd place, whilst the 7/8 Boys had a couple of very tough games, but finished on a high beating the local rivals Penguin District School in the 5th place playoff.

Thank you to the coaches, staff and parents who travelled to support our teams for the tournament.

North West High School Basketball Championships

It was a big weekend of Basketball in Burnie, Devonport, and Ulverstone (16-17 November) with 9 MRC teams from Years 7 to 10 participating against other schools from the North West Coast. On the court, it was an extremely successful weekend for our teams, bringing home 3 North-West titles (Div 1 9/10 Boys and 9/10 Girls, and Div 2 9/10 Boys), as well as 2 runner-up Div 1 titles (7/8 Boys and 7/8 Girls). This goes to show the depth of basketball talent that MRC has! Well done also to our other Division 2 teams in the 9/10 Boys, 7/8 Boys and 7/8 Girls who also competed strongly.

A significant thank you to the parents who transported their children to and between venues, and especially to those volunteer Coaches, Managers, Referees, and bench officials – we simply cannot offer this opportunity without your support, and it takes an army to support our teams at events like this!

The four Division 1 teams qualified for the State Championships which took place in Launceston on 30 November and 1 December.

Rugby 7’s in Hobart

An Under 16 Rugby team travelled to Hobart at the end of Week 4 to test themselves and experience some competition. The team took part in the Friday night Hobart School 7’s competition, as well as two friendly matches hosted by The Hutchins School on the Saturday – a rugby-relationship that has been going for a number of years. On Friday night, the team defeated Taroona High School 36-10 before their second game was cancelled.  On Saturday, the team was very competitive against Hutchins – but unfortunately, due to no subs, ran out of legs and were unable to secure a victory in the two matches.

Thanks to Mrs Donna Scott and Mr John Hamilton for supporting/accompanying the team, and we’d also like to acknowledge the ongoing support and partnership of The Hutchins School and their Rugby coordinator Sean Killian.

Schools Triathlon

Fifty MRC students were among the 1200 from schools across the North and North West taking part in in the Devonport edition of the Schools Triathlon event. The weather was perfect for racing at the Devonport Bluff, and there were some outstanding efforts by MRC teams and individuals. In his last event representing the school, having been to the past 6, Jack Latham finished first in the Senior race.

State High School Basketball Championships

Congratulations to all of our student-teams who represented MRC at the Basketball Tasmania State Championships in Launceston last weekend. It was a HUGE weekend of basketball!  Well done to the 9/10 Girls who brought the STATE TITLE back to MRC! The team was undefeated all weekend and beat St Mary’s College 47 – 41 in the final, what an effort!

Our 9/10 Boys team also had an excellent weekend, making it all the way to the final, where they fell to St Patrick’s College. Well done also to our junior teams in the 7/8 divisions who also had strong tournaments, finishing 3rd (Girls) and 6th (Boys).

A significant note of gratitude goes to our volunteer coaches, volunteer bench officials, as well as the parents and families who supported our teams to travel, attend and represent! Our students can’t have these opportunities without your support!

Junior Cricket

A friendly Year 7/8 T20 match vs Penguin High School, to put in motion an expanded competition in 2025, was set to be played on Tuesday 3 December at Penguin. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t get the memo, and due to significant rain, a modified indoor match was played by both teams. It ended up being an opportunity to both learn a new game and rekindle some friendly rivalries as many of the students play club cricket with each other.

Well done to players from both teams, and thank you to Mr King for organising. Year 7 and 8 students interested in trying Junior Cricket next year, should speak to Mr King.

This is my final newsletter as the Head of Sport. Thank you to the students, staff, parents, and extended school community for making this such an enjoyable job. I have certainly come to appreciate the passion, effort, and history of sport at the College. I wish future Marist student athletes success on the sporting arena!
