A warm welcome back to all our students and families as we begin the 2025 school year. I hope the holidays provided a chance for rest, reflection, and time with loved ones. A special welcome to our Year 7 students and all new members of our community, students, and staff. We are delighted to have you join us and look forward to supporting you on your journey at Marist.
Since my arrival, I have been deeply moved by the hospitality and generosity of spirit within this community. Thank you for the warm welcome—I have truly felt at home. It was especially wonderful to meet so many parents at our Evening of Excellence, where we celebrated the outstanding achievements of our students. Congratulations to all our award recipients; your dedication and hard work are inspiring.
It is with sadness that I need to inform you that Ms Maxine Neaton will be leaving us at the end of the term, returning to Queensland to look after her elderly parents. Ms Neaton will be missed by staff and students alike. I thank Ms Neaton for her contribution to our college.
Student Participation
With our Swimming Carnival coming up next week, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that we expect full participation from all students in College events and activities.
Attending and participating in College events is a vital component of both academic and personal growth. These gatherings can offer students invaluable opportunities to connect with their peers, the school community, and industry professionals, paving the way for future collaborations, and career prospects. Beyond networking, active participation fosters a strong sense of community and belonging, enriching the student experience, and strengthening relationships within the campus environment. Additionally, these events serve as a platform for students to explore new interests, engage in diverse activities, and hone essential leadership and communication skills. Ultimately, immersing oneself in college events enhances the overall educational journey, shaping well-rounded individuals prepared for success beyond the classroom.
New Mobile Phone Policy
As we start the new year, I would like to draw attention to the updated Mobile Phone Policy from Catholic Education Tasmania (CET), which applies to all students:
- Years 7–10: Mobile phones must be turned off and securely stored in lockers for the duration of the school day. Wearable technology must be in flight mode.
- Years 11–12: We are trialling a slightly different approach, allowing students to access their mobile phones during break times to check messages they may need to respond to. Wearable technology must remain in flight mode.
This initiative is about more than just limiting distractions—it is an opportunity to be fully present, to engage in learning, and to strengthen relationships with peers and teachers. Pope Francis often reminds us of the importance of real connection in a digital world, calling us to “use technology wisely and with discernment, ensuring that it serves our human dignity rather than diminishes it.” We encourage students to embrace this change as a way to cultivate mindfulness, balance, and deeper personal interactions.
Uniform Standards
Maintaining a high standard of uniform is a key aspect of fostering pride in our school community. This year, we will be ensuring that all students adhere to the correct uniform requirements. Wearing the uniform properly reflects respect, discipline, and a shared commitment to excellence. We ask for the continued support of parents in ensuring students arrive at school dressed appropriately and ready to represent Marist with pride.
Student Uniform and Personal Presentation Policy
As we embark on another exciting year, I look forward to working with students, staff, and families to create a positive and enriching learning environment. Thank you for your ongoing support, and I wish everyone a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
