Over the last few weeks, Year 9 History classes have been visiting the exhibitions at the Burnie Regional Museum to explore the history of Burnie and our colonial past. This is in line with the Year 9 ‘Making a Nation’ Unit which explores the early foundations of Australia as a nation. Burnie has a rich industrial and farming past, and ‘Federation Street’ is an interesting exploration into what homes and shops would have been like at the time of Federation around 1901. Students learned about some of the First Nations history of this area, the early foundational European families of Burnie, the exploration of Henry Hellyer who mapped a lot of our local region, as well as the archival and historical research services that the Museum supports. We are very grateful for the volunteers at the Museum who took their time to support our visits.
Next time you’re in town, look up and see the evident historical connections even our modern shopfronts have to our early beginnings as a town!
