The Japanese classes made rice balls (called ‘onigiri’) as a fitting end to a unit on food and ordering. Students learnt about the key ingredients for this typical Japanese snack – rice, seaweed, and a sprinkle of salt – and enjoyed adding fillings like chicken, Kewpie mayonnaise, and sweet chilli sauce, as well as more unusual ingredients like chocolate spread and horseradish!
All of the students’ onigiri looked very ‘oishii’ (delicious). They also learnt expressions like ‘itadakimasu’ – let’s eat – and ‘gochisou sama deshita’ – thank you for the food – which are an integral part of Japanese mealtimes.
