Alan Hudson Cup

The weather was turned on for the Alan Hudson Cup which took place on Sunday 2 July. Each school is only allowed to enter 1 team into the 7/8 and 9/10 divisions, making for some very competitive netball with teams coming from schools between Smithton and Devonport.

Congratulations to our 7/8 team who ran out Champions in their division, defeating Burnie High School 23 to 9 in the final. Grade 8 student Olivia Wylie was named best player in the Final.

The 9/10 team gave it their all throughout the competition, unfortunately losing narrowly in the semi-final to local rival Penguin by 1 goal.

Thank you to the BNA for hosting a wonderful tournament, and for parents in supporting our MRC teams. Also, thank you to the following coaches.

7/8 – Rebecca Johnson

9/10 – Emma Jones

NWJFU Football

The inaugural 7 – 10 Girls NWJFU season finished up on the last Wednesday of Term 2. The undefeated MRC team earned a home final against visitors Smithton who made the trip down to Burnie for the day. The MRC team continued on their winning way to take out the Western-Conference trophy, running out convincing winners 9.19.73 – 0.0.0 with Aysha Edwards kicking 4 goals. Best players for the team were Ellie Ewington, Olivia Pringle, Ebony French and Bella Templar.

With plenty of interest from MRC female students and other local schools, this competition will likely run again in 2024!

The Year 8 NWJFU MRC Navy team, who had an undefeated Western-Conference season, travelled to Ulverstone to take on Eastern Conference winner (and coastal rival), St Brendan Shaw College. St Brendan’s handled the heavy conditions the best and made the most of their chances in front of goal, running out winners 11.14.80 to 4.10.32. Our team can be proud of the performance they put up, playing the game in good spirt. Best players were Wes Redman, Harry Conkie, Jimmy Radcliffe and Harry Hodgetts, who also kicked 2 goals.

Many thanks to coach Mr Damien Gale was the driver behind the team, organising and coaching throughout the season, and to all parents, students and supporters who assisted with goal umpiring and scoring.

The 9/10 NWJFU team finished up their season against Penguin High School last Wednesday, unfortunately going down in the cross-conference semi-final. A physical, fiery and spirited performance from both teams saw a close game throughout, with Penguin kicking with the breeze in the last quarter to run out winners. Best players for MRC were: Jakhan Wells, Jackson Stubbs, Jackson Lawson, Patrick Reilly, Tyson Jenkins and Noah Ranson.

Many thanks to Coach Mr Stuart Cooper, who put in a mountain of work to sort the team each week. Also, Mr Jack Filz, and Senior College student Jakob Dwyer for assisting with the team throughout the season.

Finally, a big thank you to the staff members and parents that have given up time to assist and support students, by attending, supervising, coaching, umpiring, scoring and travelling to matches home and away. The weather hasn’t been particularly kind at times with plenty of ‘single figure temperatures’ and above average rainfall. A quick scan of the Term 2 calendar has seen MRC teams travel to local schools around Burnie, Hobart, Campbell Town (twice), Launceston (7 times), Devonport (3 times), Zeehan, Penguin, Symmons Plains and Ulverstone. Thank you to Kerger’s Coaches for providing transport for our student teams.
