Term 3 NSATIS Sport kicked off in Week 2 with Soccer, Netball and Hockey all taking to the field.

On Monday, the Soccer and Netball teams travelled to Launceston Grammar. Unfortunately, the MRC teams didn’t get come away with a win, but put up some great performances, particularly soccer who had to deal with a venue change and some very challenging weather!

On Wednesday, Scotch Oakburn’s Soccer and Hockey teams visited Burnie, and it was a much-improved performance from our teams. Girls soccer won 5-2 and the boys put in a spirited performance narrowly going down 0-2.  Our Hockey teams played their first games and notched up wins with the girls winning 6-1 and the boys 13-1 . On the girls team, Gabby Spinks scored 2 goals, whilst Tyson Johnson scored 4 for the boys.

It’s a busy term coming up with NWJFU Girls gala days for both 7/8 and 9/10 being hosted at MRC, with strong sign-ups across all teams. Other sports include the Touch Football Gala Day, NSATIS and SATIS Swimming, the North West High School 7’s Rugby Competition and High School Netball Championships.

The 7/8 NWJFU Girls gala day was held on Thursday at MRC, with 37 students across two teams representing the College. The teams’ were outstanding throughout the day, notching up wins over Yolla and Parklands. A meeting in the Grand Final saw MRC 2 take the chocolates. A big thank you to Ms Shania Saward, Mrs Renee French, the parents who goal-umpired and Ms French’s Senior College Sports Coaching class who were significant in their volunteerism across coaching and umpiring. An MRC team will be selected to travel to the North-West Finals taking place later in Term 3.

The main attraction for students in Term 3 is undoubtedly the prestigious Thurgood Cup futsal tournament. Run by the SRC, student-organised-teams from across the College will compete against each other during lunchtime breaks for bragging rights and a place in Thurgood history, with the tournament culminating with a final later in the term.

A ‘friendly’ Staff v Students match took place today to give everyone a taster of what to expect for the next term. A large crowd of onlookers witnessed a skilful and fast-paced game with the staff team earning bragging rights for another year. They took the win in a tight 2-1, with 2 Goals to Mr Johnstone for the staff team, and a goal for Bradyen Hine for the SRC.
