In Religious Education, Year 8 students have been studying our Sacraments and Rituals unit in Term 2. We have looked at all seven Catholic sacraments, as well as signs, symbols, rituals, and the Liturgical year.

The assessment for the Sacraments and Rituals unit involved students working together to create a liturgy, which we celebrated in class groups in the Sister Ursula Frayne Chapel. Students were given lots of choice for this assessment. Each student chose particular role(s) to complete in the preparation and the actual liturgy. They were able to choose a theme and decide how they would like to show this theme through music, symbols, a Gospel reading and other Bible passages, prayers, as well as a homily. Students completed an individual written reflection about their liturgy to show their understanding.

It has been wonderful to see so many students enjoy working together to develop their own liturgy and experiencing other students’ liturgies. Students particularly seemed to enjoy the opportunity to choose all the elements of their liturgy and the chance to focus on an idea that is important to them. It was an absolute delight to be able to attend such a variety of liturgies and the thoughtful ways in which they were created and experienced.
