On the last Saturday of the Term One holidays, Charlie Brown and Evelynn Jamieson attended the BRAINways’ Academicus program, held at the UTAS Sandy Bay Campus. Academicus is a holiday program designed for gifted and talented students. Offered as half day programs, the students attended two workshops which gave an introduction into the topics of Medicine and Mathematics. The programs provided both students with an opportunity to challenge, develop and stimulate their creative, critical, and logical thinking through fun, interactive, hands on experiences.

“Academicus was a pleasant experience. I personally preferred the Medicine of Exhaustion. I would definitely like to go again in the future as it was an amazing learning opportunity, and I would definitely recommend more go. I did learn quite a lot in the Medicine of Exhaustion, such as how the heart and oxygen levels rise and drop throughout exercise. It was quite fascinating.” – Evelynn Jamieson 8F

“During the school holidays, I went to the UTAS Campus in Hobart to do the BRAINways Academicus Program. In it, I learnt about how to survive in the wilderness using Mathematics, in particular, Trigonometry. It was quite good fun and I really enjoyed learning how to measure the height of a tree using Trig. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would recommend more people try it.” – Charlie Brown 7F
