On Tuesday 20 September, Marist Regional College hosted the Northern Tasmania preliminary round of the United Nations Youth Evatt Cup. The competition provides a forum for high school students to meet other like-minded students and develop their public speaking and negotiation skills. Thank you to Sharon Beattie and the Scotch Oakburn Team who travelled from Launceston to compete.

In pairs, delegates (students) were assigned a country and one resolution. The first resolution was “The Question of Food Security in Western Africa”. Delegates then developed their stance on the prepared resolution from the perspective of their assigned country. On the day, delegates debated, amended and finally voted on the prepared resolution.

Congratulations to Nichola Willams and Penny Tassicker who won the Northern Tasmania round of the United Nations Youth Evatt Cup. Students from Marist will be participating in the State Final on Friday 30 September in Launceston – check your next edition of the Marist Star to see how the students went.

Thank you to Miranda and her team from UN Youth for their organisation and especially to Aaron Woo and Liam Weber, MRC Old Scholars for their assistance on the day. Also, a big thank you to Mrs Tess McDonagh who gave her time to help, encourage and grow each student’s debating skills.
