Science of Learning

Welcome back to 2024. I am pleased to say, there is a very settled feeling around the entire College. This is a testament to the hard work of our staff ensuring that all elements of the College were organised in preparation for students returning to school. Students may have noticed that we undertook a thorough clean of all classrooms over the break to have them ‘clutter free’ and the desks set up for optimum learning in all rooms throughout the school. The flow on effect of this is it allows teachers to more easily have access to all students when roaming throughout the classroom, a strategy our teachers are keeping top of mind in Term 1.

This aligns with the CET System Project, ‘Insight, the Science of Learning’ which we are in the process of implementing at Marist over the following years. The program is designed for student engagement, explicit teaching, a low variance curriculum, and a high degree of feedback to the teacher to provide information on whether the students have indeed learnt the content that has been taught – and if not, we know as teachers, we will need to re-teach.

These strategies align with our Strategic Direction and rely on students following teacher instruction, including not moving the furniture in the classrooms.

All our teaching staff and teacher assistants travelled to the Paranaple Centre, Devonport on Friday 2 February for a full day with other CET System schools to engage further with content and professional development opportunities on the Science of Learning. Eighteen of our teaching staff undertook more intensive sessions on this last year, and have already embedded this into their practice, with a further eighteen teachers undertaking this in 2024.

Every Day at School Matters

As you may have seen in recent government communications – every day at school matters. This is also a message we are promoting here at MRC.

Every day and every lesson matters, so please be mindful of this when booking family holidays or allowing students to attend out of school events. Our teachers care deeply about our students and want to give them the best education possible to support our families.
